How the Scam Works
- You may receive an email, text, or even a phone call that appears to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
- There will be a sense of urgency and may offer a way to expedite the process.
- The text or email may direct you to a website which will be fake. You can recognize this as the site may be a .com instead of .gov or a variation.
- Once you go to the website, the scammer now has your information.
- Texts may come from an out of state area code.
- Scammers may tell you that you are not able to fly domestically without a Real-ID. The scammers won’t tell you this, but you can also use your Passport instead of a Real ID.
How To Protect Against This Scam
- Don’t click on any links or unsolicited text.
- Always go directly to your states DMV site not one included in an email or text.
- The DMV will not request your personal information via text or email.
- In most cases, you will be required to go directly to your states DMV to get Real ID.
