Keep reading why you shouldn’t answer calls from unknown numbers!
Have you ever received a call from an unknown caller and the first thing you hear is “Can you hear me?” The unknown caller may also ask “Is this so-and-so” where they may actually state your name expecting you to answer “Yes.”
This is known as the “Can you hear me scam which is also known as the “Say Yes” scam.
You may think nothing of this but the scammer is recording you so they can use your voice to commit fraud or impersonate you. In some instances, you do not have to speak, just by answering the phone the scammer now knows your number is a valid number. They can then spoof your number for more of their tricks in the future.
How to protect yourself from this Scam:
- Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. If the call is legitimate or important, they will leave a message or call back.
- Flag unknown numbers on your phone or use an app from your phone carrier to prevent future calls.
- Let the caller speak first.
- Use the default voicemail greeting instead of recording a custom message. This lessens the threat of the scammer recording your voice from your greeting.
- Be mindful of what you post on social media. Scammers can learn a lot about us by what we post. Imagine what they can do if they have your voice and other personal information about you.
- Review your privacy settings on social media.
- Always monitor your accounts by reviewing your statements, credit reports and setting up alerts if available.
